The government has burnt hundreds of bags of poor quality rice and spaghetti that had been smuggled into the country.
The cereals comprised 5,857 cartons of spaghetti and over 6,200kgs of rice which were impounded in Mombasa two years ago.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Thursday said they had obtained legal orders to destroy them.
They were found unfit for human consumption by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.
“Contraband food stuffs approximated at over Ksh. 10 Million which were impounded in October 2018 in Mombasa by a multi-agency team, and which upon testing by #KEBS were found unfit for human consumption were yesterday destroyed in a legal procedure supervised by Coast region officials,” said DCI on Friday.
The government has lately upped its fight against contraband goods after it was established the country had become a favourite destination for smugglers.
